International Food Exhibition | Gansu Specialty Agricultural Products See Soaring Global Demand, Hotpot Ingredients Exports Shine

2025.04.23

This year, Gansu’s specialty agricultural products have continued to gain popularity in international markets due to their distinctive flavors. Since the viral success of Tianshui spicy hotpot (malatang) in 2024, the province’s agricultural exports have repeatedly hit record highs, with overseas orders maintaining strong growth momentum. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

According to the latest data from Lanzhou Customs, from January to February 2025, Gansu’s pepper exports surged by more than 20 times compared to the same period last year, with export value increasing nearly 31-fold. Meanwhile, exports of bean-based products rose by over 60%. These ingredients are core components of malatang, reflecting growing international recognition of Gansu’s specialty foods.

Wang Xudong, head of foreign trade at Gansu Harvest Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd., stated that the company’s potato starch—a key ingredient for handmade malatang noodles—has been exported to markets including Italy and Cambodia, with this year’s export volume growing by 130% year-on-year.

Hong Tianhui, Director of Tianshui Customs, noted that since last year, export orders for malatang ingredients such as potato starch, Sichuan pepper, and bean products from Tianshui and Longnan have experienced explosive growth. "Overseas buyers may have started with trial orders, but after confirming the high quality of these products, many clients began using them for further processing, driving overall demand even higher," Hong added.

The International Food Exhibition notes that the unique flavor of Tianshui malatang comes from locally sourced premium ingredients, including Gangu chili peppers, Maiji Sichuan peppercorns, Dingxi wide noodles, Qin’an tofu, and other specialty agricultural products. Customs statistics also show that recent exports of Longnan-grown broccoli, bean products, and edible mushrooms have been steadily increasing.
