Food Exhibition | Breakthrough: Hainan Specialty Melons Enter North American Market

2025.04.23

A specialty agricultural product from Changjiang, Hainan has successfully penetrated the North American market. After undergoing rigorous quarantine procedures, the first batch of premium-quality melons was recently exported to Canada, marking the region's first melon product shipment beyond Asian markets. The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

The export includes two distinctive varieties, with the high-end netted melon fetching up to $20 per kilogram. Prior to this, the product had already gained access to multiple Southeast Asian markets.

Changjiang's unique climatic conditions and organic-rich sandy soil provide an ideal environment for cultivating premium melons. In 2022, the region successfully achieved localized cultivation of high-end melon varieties, filling a domestic industry gap. Known for their stringent growing requirements and exceptional quality, these melons have earned the reputation of being the "luxury item of the melon world" within the industry.

"This is our first foray into the North American market," stated a local plantation manager. Currently spanning approximately 1,200 mu (80 hectares), the plantations demonstrate impressive per-mu yield returns. Plans are underway to expand the core production area, with cultivation expected to reach 1,800 mu (120 hectares) in the second half of the year to meet growing market demand.

The Food Exhibition notes that the melon industry's development has not only boosted local economic growth but also created employment opportunities for nearby villagers. "We can earn stable income right near our homes while taking care of our families," shared a villager with years of experience working at the plantation.

Local agricultural authorities highlighted their multi-channel marketing strategies and brand-building initiatives in recent years to promote specialty agricultural exports. Leveraging the influence of regional public brands and combining online-offline promotion methods, they continue to enhance the international recognition and market competitiveness of local agricultural products.
