Food Exhibition | Cambodia's Mango Industry Ushers in New Vitality—From Surplus Fruit to Golden Opportunity

2025.04.22

At a mango processing base in Kampong Speu Province's Oral District, Cambodia, hundreds of tons of fresh mangoes are carefully processed into sweet and delicious dried mangoes, swiftly transported to the Chinese market via efficient sea routes. From raw material to finished product, the entire process takes just ten days, bringing these Cambodian delicacies to the shopping baskets of Chinese consumers.  The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

Recalling his first inspection five years ago, a Chinese business executive was deeply moved. It was the peak of mango season, with golden fruits hanging abundantly from the trees, yet local farmers faced the dilemma of "bumper harvests without prosperity." Due to the lack of stable sales channels, large quantities of high-quality mangoes were left piled under the trees to rot—a heartbreaking waste of resources.

After thorough research, investors discovered that the local mangoes were not only of excellent quality with a perfect sweet-sour balance but also highly productive. Combined with the advantageous location—close to the Sihanoukville Port, a key maritime hub—the decision was made to establish a processing plant. In early 2021, the factory officially began operations, marking a new chapter for Cambodia's mango industry.

The Food Exhibition notes that the factory's establishment has brought transformative changes to the region. By introducing advanced production technology and stringent quality standards, it has not only improved the quality of dried mangoes but also driven upgrades across the entire supply chain. Under professional guidance, local farmers have adopted more scientific cultivation methods, doubling mango yields.

Today, this modern factory has become a pillar enterprise in the area, spanning tens of thousands of square meters and creating numerous job opportunities for the surrounding community. It purchases nearly 100,000 tons of mangoes annually and produces over 10,000 tons of dried mangoes, with products highly sought after in the Chinese market. Cambodia's mangoes have also gained greater recognition, with fresh mango exports exceeding $140 million in 2024, making China one of the most important export destinations.

A Cambodian Ministry of Commerce official stated that under the Belt and Road Initiative and free trade agreements, China-Cambodia agricultural cooperation has achieved remarkable results. Chinese enterprises have not only brought capital investment but, more importantly, enhanced the added value of local agricultural products, helping Cambodian produce access international markets.

Around the factory, a vibrant new community is taking shape. To improve employees' quality of life, the company has developed commercial facilities, attracting various shops and services. Additionally, the factory has established an educational support program to assist workers' children with schooling.

A local woman who has worked at the factory for two years smiled and said, "These dried mangoes are not only sweet in taste but have also brought sweet changes to our lives." From a once-overlooked surplus fruit to today's golden opportunity, Cambodia's mango industry is writing a new chapter in its development.
