Food Exhibition | Laos Exports First Batch of Pangasius Fish to China, Opening a New Chapter in Fisheries Cooperation

2025.04.17

On March 31, 2025, Laos successfully exported its first batch of farmed and processed freshwater pangasius fish to China. The shipment smoothly passed through the customs inspection and quarantine at Shekou Port in Shenzhen, officially entering the Chinese market. This milestone signifies a significant step forward in fisheries trade between Laos and China and represents a major breakthrough in fisheries cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

The pangasius fish originates from the Mekong River Pangasius Industrial Park in Kong District, Champasak Province, Laos. The park is the country's first modern fisheries breeding and processing base, covering an area of 2,863 hectares. The first phase of the park, which began operations in 2024, is expected to produce 20,000 tons annually, with a processing capacity of 12,000 tons and an annual output value of approximately 330 million yuan. Once fully operational, the park's processing capacity will exceed 500,000 tons annually, becoming a vital export industry for Laos.

The Food Exhibition notes that the exported pangasius fish was produced by a newly built modern processing plant within the park. The plant has obtained permission from China's General Administration of Customs to export to China and employs advanced food safety and quality control systems to ensure the products meet China's high standards. In December 2024, Laos and China officially signed the Protocol on Inspection and Quarantine Requirements for the Export of Lao Aquatic Products to China, paving the way for this export.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos has provided full policy support for the project, which it believes not only established the first systematic aquatic product supply chain in Laos but also filled the gap in large-scale aquatic trade between Laos and China. This successful export is regarded as a model of global fisheries cooperation, demonstrating the potential for agricultural cooperation between the two countries and providing a new paradigm for sustainable resource utilization and the development of cross-border aquaculture.

As the industrial park gradually expands its production capacity, Laos is expected to become an important force in regional pangasius fish exports, injecting new vitality into the economic cooperation between Laos and China.
