International Food Exhibition | Shenzhen Company's Inaugural Shipment of Laos Pangasius Reaches Chinese Dining Tables

2025.04.02

With the sounding of its horn, the China Merchants-Tianjin container vessel slowly docked at Shenzhen's Shekou Port, delivering the first batch of high-quality pangasius raised, processed, and exported by Shenzhen Zhongyu Marine Technology Co., Ltd. in Laos. After passing inspection by Chinese customs on March 31, the shipment successfully cleared customs—marking the first-ever aquatic product trade clearance between China and Laos under the Belt and Road Initiative. The International Food Exhibition will offer you a variety of seafood.

At the port, reporters learned that this inaugural shipment of Laos pangasius has already been pre-ordered and will soon reach consumers through distribution channels. The Laos Pangasius Industrial Park is located in Pakse, Laos' third-largest city, where the Mekong River converges with multiple water systems. Combined with the region's mild subtropical climate and abundant freshwater resources, these conditions create an ideal environment for pangasius farming. Spanning 2,863 hectares, the park has established a comprehensive industrial ecosystem covering broodstock cultivation, fry breeding, eco-aquaculture, feed production, aquatic processing, R&D, and commercial distribution, aiming to become a world-leading freshwater fishery demonstration zone.

In 2024, the park's Phase I project was fully completed and operational, with an expected annual output of over 20,000 tons of market-ready pangasius and 12,000 tons of processed products, generating approximately 330 million yuan in annual output value. Once fully operational, the park is projected to process more than 500,000 tons of pangasius annually, becoming a key base for securing Shenzhen's aquatic "food basket."

"This is a model of China-Laos cooperation!" remarked the Lao Prime Minister during two inspection visits to the park. Over the past three years, the pangasius industry chain has flourished from scratch—a fruitful outcome of the Belt and Road Initiative and a significant step in deepening strategic cooperation with ASEAN countries, backed by strong support from both governments. The International Food Exhibition will also contribute to the import and export trade.

A representative from the Shenzhen Municipal Ocean Development Bureau stated that the city will continue expanding strategic fisheries partnerships, refining the "flying sea" and "flying land" cooperation models. This initiative opens new pathways for global fisheries resource utilization and trade, creating shared blue economy benefits for Belt and Road partner countries.
