International Food Exhibition | Russian Fish Roe Successfully Enters Emerging Asian Market

2025.04.25

Latest market trends indicate that Russian-produced cod roe is gaining traction in China's consumer market. This spring, at an international seafood trade fair held in South Korea, Chinese buyers participated for the first time in bidding for this specialty marine product. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

This market shift stems from a specialized market development initiative launched last year. Facing challenges in traditional markets due to changing international circumstances, Russia's fishing industry is actively exploring new sales channels. As an important byproduct of fisheries, cod roe was previously mainly exported to Japanese and South Korean markets, but consumption growth in these regions has plateaued in recent years.

Industry data shows that cod roe accounts for nearly 20% of Russia's total fishery export value. While the 2024 export volume remained at approximately 37,000 tons, the total export value saw a significant decline due to falling prices. Against this backdrop, the Chinese market, with its enormous consumption potential, has become a new focus for development.

Industry insiders point out that although Chinese consumers currently have limited awareness of cod roe, with consumption mainly concentrated in Japanese restaurants, this high-protein, low-fat seafood product rich in various vitamins is gradually gaining attention as health-conscious eating habits become more prevalent. Russian fishery enterprises are adjusting their product strategies in hopes of cultivating a domestic consumer market in China.

The International Food Exhibition notes that to ensure product quality, the Russian fishing industry employs modern harvesting and processing equipment while strictly adhering to international quality standards. Market experts believe the key to truly penetrating the Chinese market lies in developing new products that cater to local consumers' tastes.

It is reported that Russian fishery companies plan to increase cod roe exports to China to 1,000 tons in 2025, doubling last year's volume. This move will not only help balance market supply and demand but also open up new growth opportunities for Russia's fishing industry.
