Food Exhibition | Chongqing Specialty Agricultural Products Achieve Breakthroughs in Overseas Markets

2025.04.18

At the beginning of the new year, Chongqing's specialty agricultural products have made groundbreaking progress in international markets. Recently, instant edible water shield products from Shizhu County achieved independent export for the first time, high-quality fresh eggs from Kaizhou District successfully entered the Hong Kong market, and multiple citrus brands secured large overseas orders, demonstrating the strong momentum of Chongqing's agricultural products going global. The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

On the morning of February 8, batches of pet food were being loaded at the production, ready for shipment to European countries. According to data from Yongchuan Customs, in January 2025 alone, the customs supervised the export of pet food worth nearly 18 million yuan, destined for over ten countries and regions, including the UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong, China.

"Pet food exports are an important part of Chongqing's agricultural products entering international markets," said a relevant official from Chongqing Customs. In 2024, the total export value of Chongqing's agricultural products reached 1.63 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of nearly 40%, with growth rates ranking among the top in the country. Entering 2025, this upward trend continues, with both new product breakthroughs and traditional staples securing large orders.

On January 24, Chongqing's agricultural exports achieved two significant milestones: instant edible water shield products worth 730,000 yuan were independently exported to Japan for the first time, and 180,000 high-quality fresh eggs from Kaizhou were shipped to the Hong Kong market. These breakthroughs are attributed to Chongqing's recent agricultural export cultivation initiative.

Since 2021, Chongqing Customs, the commerce department, and district/county governments have jointly launched a three-year agricultural export cultivation project. The project adopts a phased approach: the first year focuses on obtaining export qualifications, the second on establishing initial market channels, and the third on achieving stable exports. The successful export of Kaizhou eggs is a prime example of this model. The head of Ruisang Agricultural Company stated that with the guidance of customs and commerce departments, their products smoothly obtained export qualifications and established sales channels in Hong Kong, with expected export revenue to Hong Kong reaching 10 million yuan this year.

As a traditional strength of Chongqing, citrus exports have performed exceptionally well this year. Varieties such as Fengjie navel oranges, Wanzhou rose-scented oranges, and Wushan "Lian" oranges are highly popular in Southeast Asian markets. Data shows that in 2024, Chongqing's citrus exports exceeded 150 million yuan, with growth rates surpassing 100%. In January this year, Fengjie navel orange exports increased by 200% year-on-year, Wanzhou rose-scented oranges secured a 500-ton export agreement with Malaysia, and Wushan "Lian" oranges received export orders of over 140 tons to Hong Kong.

"The unique sweet-sour taste of Chongqing citrus is deeply loved by Southeast Asian consumers," said a business manager from Yumaotong Company. To enhance international competitiveness, Chongqing is consolidating citrus brands from various districts and counties to create the "Three Gorges Citrus" regional public brand while focusing on cultivating four major industrial chains: navel oranges, hybrid citrus, blood oranges, and lemons.

The Food Exhibition notes that in terms of increasing product value-added, Chongqing's agricultural processing enterprises are also actively transforming. For example, Shizhu water shield, previously exported as raw material, has shifted to processed instant edible products, successfully securing a $100 million order from the Japanese market. Chongqing Customs stated that it will prioritize supporting the development of advantageous agricultural product industrial clusters, such as citrus and pickled mustard tubers, and guide enterprises to develop high value-added processed products.

Currently, Chongqing has established over 30 registered fruit export bases. The municipal commerce department emphasized that it will promote further transformation of agricultural enterprises toward deep processing, improve international logistics channels, and build a complete agricultural export industrial chain to help Chongqing's specialty agricultural products gain greater development space in international markets.
