International Food Exhibition |Vietnam's Agricultural Exports to China Demonstrate Robust Growth Potential

2025.04.03

Vietnam's economy expanded by 7.09% in 2024, with agricultural exports emerging as a key growth driver. Bilateral trade with China reached a historic $205.2 billion, accounting for nearly one-third of Vietnam's total trade volume. The agricultural sector has particularly benefited from regional trade agreements, with China absorbing 65.2% of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports.

In the first eleven months of 2024, Vietnam exported $4.1 billion worth of fruits and vegetables to China, marking a 28.7% year-on-year increase. This performance elevated Vietnam to become China's second-largest supplier of horticultural products, surpassing Chile but still trailing behind Thailand. The successful market access negotiations for frozen durian, fresh coconuts and farmed crocodiles in 2024 created new growth avenues. Vietnam's durian and coconut exports are showing particularly strong momentum, potentially disrupting Thailand's traditional dominance in these categories. These products will also be featured in the upcoming opening International Food Exhibition.

To sustain this growth trajectory, Vietnam is addressing critical challenges in logistics infrastructure and quality compliance. Both governments have cooperated to upgrade border facilities and streamline customs procedures, especially for temperature-sensitive products like frozen durian. Meanwhile, Vietnam has established nine accredited testing centers to meet China's increasingly stringent food safety standards, particularly regarding chemical residue limits. It's also good for deals at the International Food Exhibition.

Industry experts remain optimistic about the sector's prospects, projecting Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to China could reach $8 billion in 2025. This confidence stems from growing Chinese demand for tropical produce and Vietnam's strategic investments in production capacity and quality control systems. The continued implementation of regional trade agreements and infrastructure improvements along the supply chain will be crucial in maintaining this competitive advantage in the Chinese market.
