Asia Food Exhibition | China's Self-Bred Huaxi Cattle to Be Exported Overseas for the First Time

2025.03.18

Beijing, March 14 (Xinhua) — According to a report from the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences on March 14, China's self-bred Huaxi cattle are set to be exported overseas for the first time. This follows the official signing of the China-Laos Beef Cattle Breeding Cooperation Project in Vientiane, Laos.

It is reported that the Institute has long been committed to the research and development of key technologies for beef cattle breeding. It has successfully developed China's first liquid-phase genomic breeding chip for beef cattle, the "Cattle 110K," and established a whole-genome selection and evaluation system for Huaxi cattle. The Institute has also built a breeding database for Huaxi cattle, forming a data collection model and joint breeding system centered around breeding farms and bull stations.

According to the Asian Food Exhibition, as of now, several core breeding groups of Huaxi cattle have been established nationwide, with the breeding population reaching 23,400 heads. The number of provinces promoting the breed has increased from six to 12, and the number of bull stations housing Huaxi cattle has risen from three to 25.

As an outstanding beef cattle breed independently developed in China, Huaxi cattle are characterized by rapid growth, high-quality meat, and strong adaptability. Both their growth performance and meat quality have reached international advanced levels.

A relevant official from the Institute stated that moving forward, the Institute will continue to play a leading role in technology. It will deepen international cooperation through diversified models of exchange, including technology sharing, joint breeding, talent exchange, demonstration farm construction, and market collaboration. These efforts aim to support the global beef cattle industry and enhance the influence of China's beef cattle breeding sector in the global value chain.
