International Food Exhibition | Nordic Fresh Foods Speed into Sichuan - Smart Logistics Tackles Freshness Challenges

2025.04.14

"Can Norwegian deep-sea salmon break the 36-hour freshness limit?" At the recent "Smart Rong Chain · Global Fresh Delivery" Logistics Innovation Summit, Zhou Lixin, Dean of Chengdu International Logistics Research Institute, posed this challenge to attending enterprises. The "Ultra-Fresh Chain" solution presented on-site provided a surprising answer - through an innovative model combining air transport and unmanned cold-chain transfers, fresh food delivery time could potentially be reduced by another 12 hours.

This breakthrough is supported by Chengdu's rapidly expanding "Aviation Silk Road." The latest data shows that Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport has opened 86 international cargo routes, with cross-border fresh food throughput increasing by 45% in 2024, including salmon imports accounting for 18% of the national total. "Our 'Fresh Port Express' has established a stable 'weekly supply' mechanism between Norwegian fisheries and Chengdu hotpot restaurants," said Wu Hao, Director of the Municipal Logistics Development Service Center. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

At this industry event focused on smart cold chain, over 30 innovative applications were showcased. The most notable was the "Air-Rail Intermodal Intelligent Temperature Control System," which uses 5G IoT technology to maintain precise -18°C temperature control from Oslo Airport to Chengdu dining tables. Pilot data shows that with this new solution, salmon loss rates dropped from 5% to 1.2%.

"Now, with our 'Southern Corridor,' Chilean cherries can go from orchards to Chengdu supermarkets in just 56 hours," said Lin Xiaoyang, Secretary-General of the Southwest Cross-Border Cold Chain Alliance, presenting a new logistics map. The alliance integrates resources from Qinzhou Port's refrigerated container terminal and Chengdu Railway Bonded Warehouses, reducing overall logistics costs for products like Southeast Asian durians and Argentine red shrimp by 30%.

The International Food Exhibition notes in the breakout sessions, several tech companies presented groundbreaking solutions:

· New Hope Cold Chain's "Hydrogen-Powered Refrigerated Truck" project enables 800 km zero-carbon delivery

· SF Technology's "Drone + Cold Chain Station" network already covers 200 towns in western Sichuan

· JD Logistics' "Intelligent Sorting Robots" improve fresh food processing efficiency threefold

"These innovations represent not just technological breakthroughs but also business model transformations," pointed out Zhang Ying, Deputy Director of the Municipal Commerce Bureau. Chengdu is building a "Global Fresh Delivery in 72 Hours" service system and will next focus on developing smart customs clearance, cross-border settlements, and other supporting services to bring more international premium ingredients to consumers at better prices.

With continuous improvements to the "Belt and Road" fresh food corridor, Chengdu International Railway Port has added three new cold-chain freight trains this year. "We are testing a 'Cross-Border Fresh Food E-Bill of Lading' system," revealed Zheng Tao, Operations Director of the Port Group. "In the future, importers can complete full-process traceability and payments just by scanning QR codes on their phones." This logistics revolution is redefining what it means to be "fresh to the taste buds."
