Food Exhibition | Binge on "Kumquats" and Turn into a "Minion"? The Truth Is...

2025.03.04

Citrus fruits are now in high season, with kumquats, red beauties, Aiyuan oranges, and emperor tangerines, among others, hitting the market. These fruits are sweet and juicy, making them popular choices for the winter season.

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, citric acid, glucose, and other nutrients. Consuming them in moderation can benefit the body, accelerate cholesterol conversion, and prevent arteriosclerosis. Many people like to buy them by the box and eat them without restraint. Some individuals, after eating these fruits for several days in a row, find that their hands and cheeks turn a waxy yellow, as if they have been dyed. Could it be that they bought dyed fruit?

The yellowing of the skin is due to the prolonged and continuous intake of large amounts of citrus fruits, which leads to an excessive concentration of carotene in the blood. This carotene is then deposited in the skin tissue, causing a condition known as "carotenemia". Food exhibitions have also observed that many vegetables and fruits in daily diets can easily cause "color changes" in people. For example, excessive consumption of carrots, pumpkins, mangoes, and papayas can also turn the skin yellow.

Carotenemia is not something to be overly concerned about. It does not require deliberate treatment. Simply stop consuming foods rich in carotene, drink plenty of water to promote the excretion of excess carotene from the body, and the yellowing of the skin will subside on its own within 2 to 6 weeks.

Here is a reminder to all citizens: Although citrus fruits are excellent sources of vitamin C, the body's requirement for this vitamin is minimal. Moreover, with a typically diverse diet, vitamin C intake can be achieved through various other foods. Therefore, consuming citrus fruits in moderation and maintaining a balanced diet will meet daily nutritional needs.
